Well, there are a number of reasons. I’m sure that you all bought herbs from your local “outlet” and noticed that they really are not up to your expectation or the price. Most of you probably know that these plants are hard driven industrially, sprayed with who knows what. “Cash Crop”. Are T5HO Grow Lights only for starting seeds and cuttings?
First you have to know some things about light in general and photosynthesis. Plants uses light as a energy source to convert carbon dioxide( CO2) into organic compounds as carbohydrates like sugar or starch, (food). This is complicated but the bottom line is that 95% of the nutrients comes from Photosynthesis converting H2O in the air, sounds crazy but look it up. Think about it as if you drink a glass of vitamins and just stand in the sun to get all the nourishment you need. That of course means that the amount of light is crucial to the development of a plant. But not only the intensity of the light is important, the quality of the light (PAR) is also vital. Indoor growing requires a lot of light for your plants, and not just any light. A regular incandescent bulb won’t do, Fluorecents, CFL , MH and HPS will do. I find High-pressure lights impractical, they emit a huge amount of heat and need a lot of equipment as ballasts and powerful ventilation. Grow Herbs Indoor have been using only T5HO Fluorecents and Hi-power CFL for many years now with excellent results, why? Light diminishes exponentially with the distance from the source, Fluorecents and CFL emit practically no heat and can be as close to the plant as 5 cm. I’ll expand on light later as in why is the period of light important for blooming, or why the Color-temperature (measured in Kelvin) affects the different stages of the growth. So there will be a lot of grow- lights specially T5HO and CFL.
